National Healthy Homes Hero Award

National Healthy Homes Hero Award is an award presented by a consortium of agencies at the United States' National Healthy Homes Conference. The first year this award was presented was in 2011. The Healthy Homes Hero Award honors an advocate for healthy housing whose dedication and leadership has made significant impacts on the lives of families living in underserved communities. In 2011 it was presented along with three other national awards. The Healthy Homes Innovation Award, The Healthy Homes Pioneer Award and the Healthy Homes Partnership Award. The presenter of the 2011 awards was Steve Thomas, the Emmy Award-winning former host of PBS's This Old House and current host of Renovation Nation on Planet Green.
The winner of the 2011 Inaugural National Healthy Homes Hero Award was Tamara Elise Rubin of Portland, Oregon. Mrs. Rubin is the Executive Director of the nonprofit Lead Safe America Foundation. Mrs. Rubin was presented with this award for her volunteer advocacy work since her children were lead poisoned by the work of a painting contractor in 2005.
The National Healthy Homes Conference is held every three years. In 2008 it was held in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2011 it was held in Denver, Colorado. The location for the 2014 National Healthy Homes Conference has not yet been announced. The conference is a federally sponsored event, bringing together a wide range of health, housing and environmental professionals to work toward making housing healthy, safe and environmentally sustainable. HUD’s Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control is the lead sponsor of the Conference, in partnership with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; U.S. Department of Energy; U.S. Department of Agriculture; and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
